Introduction
AISI 904L is a superaustenitic stainless steel, renowned for its exceptional resistance to corrosion in various environments. This high-alloy, low-carbon steel belongs to the UNS N08904 designation and offers superior performance compared to standard austenitic stainless steels.
Composition
AISI 904L boasts a high chromium and nickel content, typically around 19-23% chromium and 23-26% nickel. This impressive combination provides the base for its outstanding corrosion resistance. Additionally, molybdenum (around 4-5%) is included to enhance resistance to specific acids, particularly sulfuric acid. Finally, a small amount of copper (around 1-2%) is added to further improve corrosion resistance. The low carbon content (less than 0.03%) minimizes the risk of chromium carbide precipitation during welding, which can negatively impact corrosion resistance.
Characteristics
Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: AISI 904L is particularly resistant to a wide range of corrosive environments, including sulfuric acid solutions (even dilute concentrations at elevated temperatures), phosphoric acid, and chloride-containing media. This makes it ideal for applications where standard stainless steels fall short.
Good Weldability: Due to its low carbon content, AISI 904L offers good weldability with minimal risk of weld decay. However, proper welding procedures are still crucial to maintain optimal corrosion resistance in the welded zone.
Formability: AISI 904L exhibits good formability, allowing for shaping into desired configurations during fabrication.
Strength and Hardness: While not its primary strength, AISI 904L possesses moderate strength and hardness compared to other austenitic stainless steels. These properties can be further enhanced through cold working.
Uses
Due to its exceptional corrosion resistance, AISI 904L stainless steel plate finds application in various demanding environments, including:
Chemical Processing Equipment: Components handling sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and chloride solutions can benefit from the superior corrosion resistance of 904L.
Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration: Pipelines, valves, and other equipment exposed to seawater and harsh environments utilize 904L due to its durability.
Pulp and Paper Industry: Process equipment handling bleach and other corrosive chemicals can be constructed from AISI 904L.
Food Processing Equipment: Certain components that require high corrosion resistance and good cleanability can be made from 904L.
Architectural Applications: Exterior architectural elements in highly polluted or coastal environments can benefit from the corrosion resistance of 904L.
Additional Points
AISI 904L adheres to various standard specifications, such as ASTM A240/ASME SA240. ensuring consistent material properties.
Like most stainless steels, 904L is not magnetic.
