Introduction
AISI 304 stainless steel plate is the most widely used and versatile grade of stainless steel globally. This austenitic steel, belonging to the 300 series, is known for its excellent formability, good corrosion resistance, and attractive surface finish.
Composition
The key elements in AISI 304 are chromium (around 18%) and nickel (around 8%). This chromium-nickel combination provides the foundation for its corrosion resistance and good formability. Manganese is also present in smaller amounts, contributing to its strength and hardness.
Characteristics
Excellent Formability: AISI 304 exhibits exceptional formability, allowing for easy shaping and drawing during fabrication. This makes it ideal for applications requiring complex shapes.
Good Corrosion Resistance: AISI 304 offers good corrosion resistance in a variety of environments, including atmospheric conditions, fresh water, and mildly acidic or alkaline solutions. Proper surface finishing and maintaining cleanliness can further enhance its corrosion resistance.

Strength and Hardness: While not the strongest stainless steel, 304 offers moderate strength and hardness compared to other austenitic grades. These properties can be improved through cold working.
Temperature Resistance: AISI 304 exhibits good resistance to oxidation and maintains its strength at elevated temperatures up to 870°C (1598°F).
Ductile: AISI 304 is ductile, meaning it can deform under stress without breaking, making it suitable for applications requiring some flexibility.

AISI 304 is not magnetic in its annealed (untreated) state. However, it can become slightly magnetic after cold working.
A variation, AISI 304L, offers similar properties but with an even lower carbon content for improved corrosion resistance in specific applications.
