Introduction

AISI 201 stainless steel plate is a cost-effective, austenitic, chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel. Developed as a nickel-saving alternative to 304 stainless steel, it offers a good balance between affordability, formability, and moderate corrosion resistance.

Composition

The key elements in AISI 201 are chromium (16% to 18%) and nickel (3.5% to 5.5%). Compared to 304. 201 has lower nickel content. Manganese (5.5% to 7.5%) and nitrogen are added to partially compensate for the reduced nickel, influencing its properties.

Characteristics

Cost-Effective: A major advantage of AISI 201 is its affordability compared to higher nickel-content stainless steels like 304.

Moderate Corrosion Resistance: While not as corrosion-resistant as 304. 201 offers adequate protection in mildly corrosive environments, especially indoors. Proper surface finishing and maintaining cleanliness are crucial for optimal corrosion resistance.

Good Formability: AISI 201 exhibits good formability, allowing for shaping and drawing during fabrication. This characteristic makes it suitable for applications requiring moderate bending and forming.

Weldability: AISI 201 can be welded, but due to its higher manganese content, it's more susceptible to weld decay compared to 304. Special welding procedures and post-weld cleaning are often recommended.

Strength and Hardness: AISI 201 offers moderate strength and hardness compared to other austenitic grades.

Non-Magnetic (Annealed): In its annealed (untreated) state, AISI 201 is non-magnetic. However, it can become slightly magnetic after cold working.

Uses

Due to its affordability, decent formability, and moderate corrosion resistance, AISI 201 stainless steel plate finds application in various industries, including:

Automotive Parts: Wheel trims, exhaust system components, and decorative trim can be made from 201 due to its formability and affordability.

Appliance Parts: Washing machine parts, dishwasher interior components, and appliance trim can benefit from the cost-effectiveness and formability of 201. However, for components with high moisture exposure, 304 might be a better choice.

Building Materials: Certain architectural panels, roofing elements, and enclosures can utilize 201 for its affordability and workability, especially in less demanding environments.

Hardware: Applications such as screws, fasteners, and brackets can benefit from the affordability and formability of 201. considering the environment and corrosion expectations.

Additional Points

AISI 201 comes in various standard specifications, such as ASTM A240/ASME SA240. which define its dimensions and tolerances.

When selecting between 201 and 304. consider the specific application's environment and corrosion resistance requirements. For higher corrosion resistance needs, 304 is generally preferred.
