Introduction

AISI 2507 stainless steel coil, also known as Super Duplex 2507 or UNS S32750. is a high-performance stainless steel renowned for its exceptional combination of strength, superior corrosion resistance, and good high-temperature performance. This versatile super duplex stainless steel offers significant advantages over standard duplex grades like 2205. making it ideal for highly demanding environments.

Composition

The key elements in AISI 2507 are:

Chromium (24.0% - 26.0%): Provides the foundation for excellent overall corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength.

Nickel (6.0% - 8.0%): Contributes to superior corrosion resistance, improved high-temperature strength, and maintains a stable austenitic-ferritic microstructure.

Molybdenum (3.0% - 4.0%): Significantly enhances resistance to pitting corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments, and improves overall corrosion performance.

Nitrogen (0.10% - 0.20%): Strengthens the microstructure and further enhances pitting corrosion resistance.

Characteristics

Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: AISI 2507 offers superior resistance to various corrosion types, surpassing even 2205 duplex stainless steel. It excels in environments with chlorides, sulfides, and other aggressive chemicals, making it ideal for demanding applications.

High Strength and Toughness: Compared to both standard austenitic and duplex grades, 2507 boasts exceptional strength, yield strength, and toughness. This translates to superior performance under high loads and makes it suitable for structural applications in harsh environments.

Good Formability: While not as formable as standard austenitic steels, AISI 2507 exhibits moderate formability in its annealed condition, allowing for some shaping during fabrication.

Weldability: AISI 2507 can be welded, but due to its super duplex microstructure, proper procedures and post-weld heat treatment are crucial to maintain optimal corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in the weld zone.

Good High-Temperature Strength: Compared to standard duplex and austenitic steels, 2507 retains good strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures up to 550°C (1022°F).

Good Toughness at Low Temperatures: AISI 2507 maintains good toughness and ductility at cryogenic temperatures, making it suitable for some low-temperature applications.

Uses

Due to its exceptional combination of superior corrosion resistance, high strength, good weldability, and high-temperature performance, AISI 2507 stainless steel coil finds application in various critical environments, including:

Chemical Processing Equipment: Tanks, piping, vessels, and heat exchangers handling extremely corrosive chemicals, especially those containing chlorides and sulfides, benefit from the exceptional corrosion resistance of 2507.

Oil and Gas Industry: Components in harsh offshore oil and gas production, transportation, and storage, such as pipelines, risers, and wellheads, can utilize 2507 for its strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature performance.

Pulp and Paper Industry: Equipment handling highly corrosive bleaching solutions and other chemicals in the pulp and paper industry can benefit from the super duplex properties of 2507.

Marine Applications: Shipbuilding components, offshore structures, and seawater handling equipment exposed to harsh saltwater environments with high chloride content utilize 2507 due to its superior corrosion resistance.

Flue Gas Desulfurization Systems: Components handling highly corrosive flue gases containing sulfur oxides in power plants benefit from the exceptional corrosion resistance of 2507.

Additional Points

AISI 2507 comes in various standard specifications, such as ASTM A240/ASME SA240. ensuring consistent material properties.

AISI 2507 is not magnetic in its annealed state but can become slightly magnetic after cold working.

When selecting between 2507 and other stainless steel grades, consider the specific application's environment, required strength, corrosion resistance needs, and budget. For less demanding environments, 2205 duplex or even standard austenitic steels like 316L might be suitable options.
